Important: Neil Peart News web address changing

On Wednesday evening (Pacific time), March 14, 2010, I'll be changing the Neil Peart - The Latest News web and feed addresses. This change will not affect Twitter or Feedblitz subscriptions. If you use these services to receive updates, you won't need to make any changes.

New XML feed address: http://neilpeartnews.andrewolson.com/feeds/posts/default (This address will not work until after the update on Wednesday) - The old address, http://www.andrewolson.com/Neil_Peart/neilpeart_news/peart_atom.xml, will not redirect automatically. If you're using a feed reader, you'll need to enter the new address.

New web address: http://neilpeartnews.andrewolson.com (This address will not work until after the update on Wednesday) - The old address http://andrewolson.com/Neil_Peart/neilpeart_news/neilpeart_news.htm should redirect automatically.

When these changes have been made, you'll see announcements at the old and new addresses.

I apologize for any inconvenience this change might cause you. I need to make this update due to new Blogger requirements, the blogging service I use.

Let me know if you have any questions.

List of all Bubba's Book Club books

I thought it would be interesting to have a place where you could view all of Neil Peart's book recommendations -- so I set up an Amazon store with all the books he's reviewed so far (around 60 books).

There were a few books that I couldn't include, because they weren't available on Amazon.

Go to my page featuring all Bubba's Book Club books

I'll continue to update this page when Neil reviews new books.

Go to Bubba's Book Club on NeilPeart.net.

Site Updates - 8/23/09

Hope everyone is having a great summer. I've added a few updates to the site that I wanted to tell you about:

Twitter - Yes, I finally jumped on the Twitter bandwagon. If you want to receive notifications for Neil Peart News Updates via Twitter, go to Neil Peart News on Twitter and click Follow. If you're wondering what Twitter is all about, it's a social networking tool that allows you to send short "microblog" updates. I've found it's a unique way to read what's going on with things and people I'm interested in. While you're at it, you can also follow Rush (official), Rushisaband, and Power Windows on Twitter, too.

Neil Peart setup - I added the DW kit that Neil used for his Master Class on Drum Channel. This is also updated in the history of his drumkits.

Building the kit - I added some pictures of the Snakes & Arrows kit being set up, taken by John Arrowsmith. This page also includes pictures of Larry Allen setting up the Power Windows kit, and some screenshots of Neil's kit being assembled for the A Work in Progress instructional video.

Upcoming Releases - I updated the dates for upcoming releases for Neil. Next up: Vertical Horizon's Burning the Days, which includes three tracks with Neil as guest drummer.

1970s photos - Added 5 new photos.

1980s/1990s photos - Added 15 new photos.

Delicious bookmarks - When I find links to interviews or other bits that don't fit neatly into a "Neil Peart News Update," I add it to my Neil Peart bookmarks on Delicious.

New postcard - Lamb Saag sent me a postcard from Neil a while ago, but I just posted this recently. Thanks, Lamb!

Site Updates and News - 8/6/08

Well, the Snakes & Arrows tour is over. In the past few weeks I've taken some time to reflect on the tour and the shows I saw -- the same as most fans, I suspect. You can read about the four shows I saw on the 2008 tour here. You can also see most reviews and stories about the Snakes & Arrows tour on my Snakes tour page. You can also read the stories I bookmarked for the 2008 Tour.

Current and Upcoming Releases

Fortunately, there are a few current and upcoming releases for Neil Peart and Rush. A few of these include:

  • Neil Peart's 30th Anniversary kit and "Ghost Rider" motorcycle in Columbus, Ohio. (If anyone has any pictures they'd like to share, please send them.)
  • The Rotterdam DVD shot in 2007 and scheduled to release on November 4, 2008.
  • The Roadshow Companion book scheduled to release in December 2008 (pushed back from July).
  • The Burning for Buddy Memorial Concert in October in New York City, which I plan to attend.

You can track all the current and future releases on the Upcoming Releases page.

Snakes & Arrows drum setup photos

I've added a collection of photos from Rush.com the crew setting up Neil's Snakes kit. (Thanks to John Arrowsmith for taking all these photos!)

Site Updates and News - 7/4/08

As of this writing, Rush is currently on the final leg of their 2008 Snakes & Arrows tour. From what I've gathered, the tour has been successful, even though ticket sales are down.

On the Snakes & Arrows page, I've added a few links:

In my personal blog, I've added reviews of all the shows I attended:

  1. Rush at Clark County Amphitheater - 6/1/08
  2. Rush at the Gorge - 5/31/08
  3. Rush at GM Place - Vancouver, B.C. - 5/29/08
  4. Phoenix - Day 2 - Rush at Cricket (5/1/08)

Some of the more interesting stuff I'm come across in the news department:

Neil Peart has won DRUM! magazine's Drummer of the Year award for the second year in a row. The results are on newsstands in the August 2008 issue. To read last year's article, go to the digital version of DRUM! November 2007. Also, check out the article in the same issue entitled Neil Peart and Gary McCracken: A Two Prog Approach about the making of Battlescar. You can also read the article on Gary McCracken's site

Rush Never Sleeps: Rolling Stone -- If you haven't read this yet, check out the surprisingly positive article on Rush in Rolling Stone. For most Rush fans, this article appearing in RS is not unlike the fall of the Berlin Wall. However, this is not the first article that has appeared in Rolling Stone about Rush. An article about Rush by David Fricke, a longtime RS reporter, appeared in the May 28, 1981 issue: Rush: Power From the People. Like the current article, this one tries to decipher the Rush riddle that has eluded the popular media and rock critics.

Neil Peart's favorite cookie is the Pepperidge Farms' Nantucket (regular, not double chocolate). Neil's tour bus driver, Dave, recently posted a blog entry on his MySpace page about the elusive cookie -- and how they sometimes catch fire.

Finally, my friend's Rush Auctions are back. This week, you can get some great Neil Peart posters.

Site updates and news - 2/12/08

Here are some updates and news:

Rare Neil Peart drum kit photo

Michael, of NeilPeartDrumsticks.com, recently sent me a very rare photo of Neil's drumkit from 1974. You can see the photo in the 1970s gallery. Thanks, Michael!

More pictures of Neil Peart's Fort Wayne drum clinic

Michael also forwarded to me two additional pictures from Neil's drum clinic at Fort Wayne. You can see these two pictures in the 1990s-1990s Gallery starting in the second row.

Tough Break

As most of you have probably heard by now, a Rush-related song called "Tough Break" has surfaced on the Internet. In a nutshell, Rush recorded a song with Jack Secret (an alias for Tony Geranios, a longtime Rush crew member) and Skip Gildersleeve (another Rush crew member). Here's more information about this song:

Neil Peart-Drums
Jack Secret-Voice, Bass
Alex Lifeson-Guitar
Skip Gildersleeve-Guitar
Geddy Lee-Keys, Backing Voice

In September, at Le Studio, Quebec, Peart jammed with the road crew on a song, and was joined by Lee and Lifeson. The song was recorded later by Rush and temporarily titled "Tough Break." From the Signals Tourbook:

"We were getting a little bored with inactivity. During the mixing of "Exit... Stage Left" there was really not much for us to do except say "it sounds good" or "it doesn't sound good."

"I had been working down in the little studio, cleaning and renovating an old set of Hayman drums that were kicking around, and had started working on a "Jack Secret" song with Jack and Skip from the crew. Geddy and Alex soon joined in on keyboards and rhythm guitar, and we later recorded the song ("Tough Break") up in the studio."

Rushisaband has a nice post about the history of this track, too.

I've listened to this song a bunch of times, and I think it's really interesting. It's a musical snapshot of the band between "Moving Pictures" and "Signals," and you can definitely hear the keyboard ideas of "Subdivisions" and "Countdown" starting to form.

Also, you can hear how Neil's drumming changes a song that could be very ordinary. For example, listen to the hi-hat work in the second verse, as well as the snare placement.

You can download the song here. Thanks to MonicaZ for sending this to me.

30th Anniversary kits sold out

If you were itching to spend $30K on a Neil Peart 30th Anniversary kit, the kits have now sold out. Here's the announcement on the Guitar Center web page.

If you want to see a few happy owners, you can see them on my Replicas page (listed as "Commemorative" kits).

Alex Lifeson's guitar lessons

Thanks to a new website called iVideosongs, you can learn to play "Limelight," "The Spirit of Radio," and "Tom Sawyer" from Big Al himself. The lessons cost $9.99 each, and you can download them right onto your computer.

I download "Limelight" and "The Spirit of "Radio," and thought they were both really cool (and I don't even play guitar). It's especially interesting to listen to Alex talk about why he plays what he plays. Here's a link to all of Alex's lessons.

Site updates - 1/10/08

Happy New Year to everyone! Looks like we should have some new Rush tour news soon, according to Rushisaband.

Here are a few updates from the site from the past few weeks:

  • I updated the right menu on the Neil Peart home page. With this menu, you can now go directly to Neil Peart articles, news, and quality reading issues directly from the menu. Also, you can hover over most of the menu items for more information -- for example if you hover over March 2007 NEP News, "The Count of Words" pops up.)

    image

  • One new postcard posted to the Postcards from Neil section.
  • One new drum kit posted to the Replicas page. Alessandro Bianchini has refinished his Slingerland kit to match Neil's drums from A Farewell to Kings and Hemispheres albums and tours. Very cool!
  • A Snakes & Arrows bass drum head replica from Alan Walker.
  • New photos posted to the Snakes & Arrows gallery from MonicaZ, Roman Dino, and Ross Halfin.

New Andrew MacNaughtan signed Rush prints

Rush's photographer Andrew MacNaughtan has a new Rush "Snakes & Arrows" series available for purchase. The sales of this series will go to charity.

There are two prints available:

Here is Andrew's intro from his website. The intro also includes some information about the documentary he directed, which will be included on the DVD version of "Snakes & Arrows."

Hello Everyone!

For years, I've wanted to make a documentary of Rush in the recording studio, and tell the story of the process of making an album.  So, it was the opportunity of a lifetime to be a "fly on the wall" and capture rare footage of the guys at work on their upcoming release, Snakes & Arrows.  The documentary, entitled The Game of Snakes & Arrows, was filmed over the course of 20 days at a beautiful studio in New York's Catskill Mountains.

The band gave me unprecedented access into their creative process and I had the privilege to witness first hand the writing and recording of their songs.  In fact, I was able to capture on film a rare moment of Geddy jamming on his bass as he created a new song for the album.

To complement the documentary and to celebrate the release of the new CD, Rush have agreed to sign a very limited edition of prints to raise money for several of my favorite charities.  These photos were shot exclusively at the studio sessions, during the filming of the documentary.  This is a rare opportunity to own a little piece of Rush history, and it's all for a good cause!

Cheers,

Andrew MacNaughtan

New website navigation and other items

I wanted to report a few changes to this website that will (hopefully) help you find information faster.

New right-side navigation

After not being able to find a few things on my own website(!), I decided to create new right-side navigation. This navigation allows you to explore the site by categories. Click a section to expand or collapse it. It's located on the Neil Peart home page.

"Snakes & Arrows" section

I've continued to add information to the "Snakes & Arrows" section of the site. It will continue to expand as the new CD/DVD releases, tour starts, etc. Stop in and check it out periodically.

Rush auction page

As I state on the auction page, my friend has one of the best Rush collections in the world. They are selling a lot of their duplicate items -- some of them very rare and unique. There are new items every week. The auction page is located here.
